Sony and Panasonic, two leading Japanese producers of consumer electronics products, have jointly developed a technology that will successfully add almost a third of more storage space in the currently available 25 GB Blu-ray discs, thus allowing users to store around 33GB of data with ease.

The technology called i-MLSE which is an acronym for Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation is a new method of evaluating Blu-ray Disc media quality that is expected to accelerate development of Blu-ray discs offering a greater storage space.

Interestingly, this new technology works at a software level, which means that users won’t have to worry about changing their hardware for enjoying the benefits offered by i-MLSE technology that adds additional memory layers on the Blu-ray discs.

However, the only issue that can delay the widespread adaptation of i-MLSE is its complex calculation procedure, but even that can be taken care of with recent hardware advancements.

The specifications regarding this revolutionary technology were unveiled by Sony and Panasonic at the International Symposium on Optical Memory 2009 (ISOM ’09) in October.

The two major players in the consumer electronic market plan to promote the widespread use of i-MLSE technology by the Blu-ray association, of which, these two companies are core members.
